Important!

Université de Montréal is a French-language university, and most classes and services are conducted in French. However, the Music Faculty wishes to welcome students from around the world in its graduate-level programs. For this reason, the following program description is provided in English.

Develop an original creative approach by crafting musical works that showcase distinctive language, style and form.

Overview

About this program

Follow your creative calling

The doctorate program is intended for students who are highly proficient in instrumental or electroacoustic composition techniques, who have written several pieces and are interested in pursuing artistic or teaching opportunities. In this program, you will develop an original creative approach by crafting large-scale works that demonstrate complete mastery of language, style and form. You will also demonstrate esthetic reflection by presenting your creative process using clear, consistent and critical language.

Fine-tuning your unique, individual creative process means being proficient in the traditional instrumental composition tools, such as the transcription of musical ideas to a score, and in the technology tools developed for the various forms of digital music.

A major focus of the program is on developing your composition skills under the guidance of a faculty member, through composing concert music, music for the screen (cinema, video games, the web) and the stage (dance, theatre).
