About this program
Develop a critical perspective on Quebec, Canadian and U.S. law
Focused on the versatility and diversity of the law, this program enables you to acquire the knowledge necessary to understand the institutions and history of the Canadian and U.S. common law systems, thereby facilitating an effective comparison with civil law institutions. In doing so, you will gain knowledge of English Canadian and U.S. comparative law across major areas of law (contracts, property, torts, family law, civil procedure, etc.).
Throughout the program, you will learn to solve problems using legal categories from different systems, enabling you to develop original solutions to complex issues. Finally, this program provides holders of a bachelor’s degree recognized by the Barreau du Québec with training that grants them access to the professional bar associations of other Canadian provinces or foreign countries.

To be eligible as a regular student, and subject to the quality of the application, the candidate must either:
Meet the general admission requirements (section XI) of the “Règlement pédagogique des Études supérieures et postdoctorales” (educational regulations of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies).
Pour être admissible à titre d'étudiant régulier au programme de J.D. (Common Law nord-américaine), le candidat doit :
- satisfaire aux conditions générales d'admissibilité (section XI) du Règlement pédagogique de la Faculté des études supérieures et postdoctorales;
- être titulaire d'un diplôme de 1er cycle décerné par la Faculté de droit de l'Université de Montréal ou d'un diplôme jugé équivalent; dans tous les cas, le diplôme doit répondre aux exigences de la Fédération des ordres professionnels de juristes du Canada;
- faire preuve d'une bonne connaissance des langues française et anglaise.
