FAQ on new French language requirement

Starting in the Winter 2026, Université de Montréal is updating its French language requirement to better inform, guide and support you throughout the admission process, especially if you must submit the results of a recognized French test. The new French requirement applies to undergraduate programs as well as to some graduate programs.

To find out which requirements apply to your admission session, refer to the section that corresponds to your program start date.

How does the French language requirement apply to your situation

You must demonstrate your proficiency in French if your previous studies were partially in French or another language. This is done via the Centre étudiant platform (your Student Centre).

If you’re applying for admission this fall, the French language requirement remains as it was prior to the revision: refer to the information given below. Please note, however, that you’ll benefit from a new interface in your Centre étudiant to track your application and upload any documents that may be requested as supporting documentation depending on your study path.

French language requirement in effect for Fall 2025

To be eligible, you must provide proof of the level of French language proficiency required for the study program that interests you.

This can be done by fulfilling one of the following:

  • Passing the Épreuve uniforme de français at the college level (administered by the Quebec Ministry of Higher Education)
  • Completing a study path (page in French) recognized by Université de Montréal
  • Achieving a minimum B2 level in both oral and written comprehension on a French test (page in French) accepted by Université de Montréal, taken within 24 months before the start of the session for which you are applying

Be sure to meet the deadline (page in French) for uploading your supporting documents under the Exigence de français (French language requirement) task in your Centre étudiant. Deadlines vary by program.

Compulsory refresher in written French: After admission, you may be required to complete a written French assessment. Based on the results, you may need to take one or more courses. This information will be transmitted via your Centre étudiant.

To better support your academic success, inform you about the French language requirement and provide support throughout your studies, UdeM is implementing new procedures that will take effect starting with admission for the Winter 2026 session:

  • A clearer assessment of your oral and written French to meet program requirements
  • Up-to-date information on French courses to help you improve, if needed
  • A chance to update us on your progress in French before your program begins
  • Personalized support throughout the admission process
