FAQ on new French language requirement

Starting in the Winter 2026, Université de Montréal is updating its French language requirement to better inform, guide and support you throughout the admission process, especially if you must submit the results of a recognized French test. The new French requirement applies to undergraduate programs.

To find out which requirements apply to your admission session, refer to the section that corresponds to your program start date.

How does the French language requirement apply to your situation

You must demonstrate your proficiency in French if your previous studies were partially in French or another language. This is done via the Centre étudiant platform (your Student Centre).

For Fall 2025 admission, nothing changes—the French language requirement remains the same. Updates take effect starting in the Winter 2026 session:

  • A clearer assessment of your oral and written French to meet program requirements

  • Up-to-date information on French courses to help you improve, if needed

  • A chance to update us on your progress in French before your program begins

  • Personalized support throughout the admission process

However, please note that only the tracking of your application and the procedures for submitting your documents may change depending on when you apply for admission. In fact, you will have access to a new section in your Centre étudiant starting August 1, 2025, to submit your documents.

To better support your academic success, inform you about the French language requirement and provide support throughout your studies, UdeM is implementing new procedures that will take effect starting with admission for the Winter 2026 session.

No matter when you apply for either Winter 2026 or subsequent sessions, you will benefit from the new French language requirement. However, if you apply before August 1st, you must wait until that date to upload the required documents. After August 1st, everything will be integrated directly into the admissions process.

French language requirement in effect as of Winter 2026

  1. Throughout the admission process, you’ll see at a glance the French language requirement for the study program you’re interested in and the next step to take.

  1. You can meet the French requirement by submitting either:

  • Documents that correspond to a recognized academic background in French
  • A certificate of results from a French test accepted by UdeM

  1. If you need to submit a certificate of results from an accepted French test:

  • You will need to submit 3 results: written comprehension, oral comprehension and written expression (new)

  • The addition of written expression as an eligibility requirement will allow you to know, before submitting your application, whether or not you need to take French courses during your first year at UdeM

  • You will be able to submit more than one test result, provided you meet the deadline for submitting supporting documents
