Here are some tips and tricks for scanning, converting and combining the supporting documents to provide for your application.

From hardcopy to digital format

Scanning your documents

If you only have paper copies of your official documents, take photographs of them or scan them directly to PDF format. 

If you do not have access to a scanner:

  • The Service d’impression at the Université de Montréal and the FAÉCUM are here to help you! Don’t hesitate to use their services. Some fees apply.
  • Use the services of a photocopying centre near you.

For UdeM students: self-service devices are accessible on campus. Don’t forget to bring your USB key! Some fees apply.

Step-by-step help

Follow these procedures to prepare your documents in the desired format.

Converting to PDF format

From a Microsoft Office file

To export or save your file in PDF format:

  1. Go to the File menu 
  2. Click on Save As (on Windows) or Export (on iOS) and select PDF format
From an image file

From Windows Photo Viewer:

  • Click on Print in the Print menu 
  • Select Adobe PDF as the printer 
  • Finish by clicking on Print 

Combining your documents in one PDF file

To combine several pages in one PDF file, several tools are free and accessible online, such as PDF Candy.

Converting to PDF format

On Android in Photos 

After taking a photo of your document:

  1. Open the Gallery or Photos application 
  2. Select the photo of your document 
  3. Click on the More button 
  4. Click on Print/export to PDF 
  5. Then click on Select a printer and Save as PDF 
On iOS in Notes

iOS 11 and later versions allow you to scan documents in Notes. You can also add a signature or sign a document by hand.

To scan a document:

  1. Open a new note. Click on the More   button, then on Scan documents 
  2. Place your document in view of your device’s camera 
    • If your device is on auto mode, your document will be scanned automatically
    • If your device is on manual mode, click on  or on one of the volume control buttons
  3. Drag the corners to adjust the scan to the size of the page, then press Keep scan. Add additional pages to the document as needed or click on Save when you have finished.

Combining your documents in one PDF file

Adobe Scan is a tool for scanning and converting to PDF format and assembling several pages in one document. It is available at the following links:

Then, follow these simple steps:

  1. Register for a free account
  2. Point your device’s camera at the document and click on Save as PDF
  3. Repeat for each page to add to the document
